Upper Limb Lymphedema

Upper limb lymphedema causes swelling, heaviness, and restricted movement, often after cancer treatment. At MY PAIN CLINIC GLOBAL, physiotherapy restores function and prevents complications.

What is Lymphedema?

Upper limb lymphedema is the abnormal swelling of the arm, hand, or shoulder region caused by impaired lymphatic drainage. It often develops after breast cancer surgery, radiation therapy, trauma, or infection. The condition leads to heaviness, discomfort, and restricted mobility. Physiotherapy, including manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, exercise, and education, is essential for reducing swelling, preventing complications, and improving quality of life.

Causes of Upper Limb Lymphedema:

  • Lymph node removal during breast cancer surgery
  • Radiation therapy damage to lymphatic vessels
  • Post-surgical scar tissue restricting lymph flow
  • Recurrent infections (cellulitis)
  • Trauma or injury to lymphatic pathways
  • Congenital lymphatic malformations

Symptoms of Upper Limb Lymphedema:

  • Persistent swelling of arm, hand, or shoulder
  • Heaviness or tightness in the limb
  • Reduced flexibility and range of motion
  • Aching or discomfort in the arm
  • Recurrent skin infections
  • Thickening or hardening of the skin (fibrosis)
  • Difficulty wearing rings, watches, or sleeves
