Facial/Bells Palsy

Bell’s Palsy causes sudden facial weakness or drooping due to facial nerve inflammation. Physiotherapy at MY PAIN CLINIC GLOBAL promotes faster recovery and improved facial control.

Bell’s Palsy is a sudden weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles, usually on one side, caused by inflammation or compression of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII). It can result in drooping of the mouth, inability to close the eye, and changes in taste or tear production. Though often temporary, early physiotherapy with facial exercises, neuromuscular retraining, and evidence-based modalities can speed recovery and improve long-term outcomes.

Causes of Bell’s Palsy:

  • Viral infections (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella-zoster)
  • Inflammation of the facial nerve
  • Reduced blood supply to the nerve
  • Autoimmune reactions
  • Diabetes-related nerve vulnerability
  • Exposure to cold air or stress (potential triggers)

Symptoms of Bell’s Palsy:

  • Sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face
  • Drooping of the mouth and eyelid
  • Inability to close the eye or smile fully
  • Loss or alteration of taste on the affected side
  • Increased sensitivity to sound in one ear
  • Dry eye or excessive tearing
  • Difficulty with speech or eating
